Rookie Ayrton Senna, qualified 13th in his Toleman, for a race notoriously difficult to overtake. However, in torrential rain Senna scythed through the field and was on the cusp of victory before the race was prematurely ended, just as Senna was due to take the last lap lead, allowing pole sitter Prost to claim 1st place. A cruel end for Senna, denying his first win …undeterred, Senna would go one to write his own place in the history books.
